Lucy Sheridan Talks Less Comparison & More Happiness

It’s a Sunday morning and you’re innocently scrolling through Facebook on your phone, there’s nothing to get up for yet so why not? Plus, a little Facebook before breakfast never hurt anyone, right?

Until…

You find yourself saying to the cat; “WTF! How the hell has she lost all that weight?…And she’s just got engaged in the Caribbean…What! And he wrote a love poem in the sand…Holy Mackerel!” 

One hour later…

You’re still looking through her profile and discover that they had only been together for a few months, that she must be earning really good money because they travelled first class and she’s still friends with Louisa from class B, who is still untouchably beautiful and seems to have her own very successful business.

Three hours later…

You haven’t got out of bed (spin class is out of the window then) and you’re beating yourself up for having no one in bed beside you, crucifying yourself for the chips you had last night and fending off tears because you can’t see how you’ll ever be as successful as Louisa.

Day ruined. Monday looking heavy. Week ahead filled with comparison.

It may sound like an excerpt out of Bridget Jone’s Diary but comparison is very real and it can grasp the best of us in it’s fierce fist, screwing you up, all tight and purse lipped like the last and lonely prune to be eaten from your snack pack, until you don’t even know who you are anymore. Then before you know it you find yourself telling friends that you feel depressed-even though when on paper, life is good.

When it gets this bad, you need an expert, cue Lucy Sheridan.

I’ve just jumped off Skype from a super energised and inspirational chat with Lucy Sheridan, the comparison free coach and although the above story is not hers, her ending and ‘enough is enough’ moment, sounds similar. Three years of feeling very dark, very low and very stuck, until she found a way to feel good again-comparison free.

She’s the co-author of #HIGHERSELFIE and has shared her highly valuable tips on Oprah’s Life Class, and I was absolutely over-the-moon when readily and excitedly, she agreed to share her story and tips with me.

3 Tips To Kick Start Your Health Kick

After a summer of meals out and a few big parties here or there, I’m on a health kick and to kick start my health kick I take these three tips into consideration.

Tip 1: Set a healthy mind-set

What is important to you about changing the way that you eat?

Take a moment to think about why you want to change the way you eat and get clear on your motivation. It can be too easy to push yourself to be healthy because you feel you should be rather than want to be.

I should be slimmer, I should eat better, I should only eat organic food are just some examples of what you might be saying to yourself.

When we set goals from this place it makes it much easier for us to either not fully commit or to become despondent because we are not being true to our own desires and vision. If you think you should do something then it suggests that it is someone else’s vision, not your own.

What is important might be that you want to improve your energy levels, feel happier and more confident in your body. For me it’s about feeling my best and I know that when I eat the right food there’s no stopping me.

Tip 2: Set yourself up for success

How might you sabotage your new healthy eating lifestyle and what do you need to do to prevent that?

You need to make sure that your environment is supporting your new healthy eating goals and your long term vision.

Start by getting rid of any processed or junk food from your kitchen cupboards so that you have a clean slate to work from. Then take some time to think about the type of food which inspires you. This could mean reading different food blogs or treating yourself to a new cookbook full of recipes you can’t wait to try.

Stock up on all the ingredients you need to create new dishes with. You may be using some new ingredients that are not familiar to you, really look into why these ingredients are beneficial for your health. This will spur you on when you look back at why you have started to create a new health eating lifestyle.

When life gets busy or we have had guests, the foods that don’t serve me best tend to creep into the house and I know that if it’s there I will eat it. What works for me is to just chuck it straight out and make sure I have the fridge stocked with healthy foods I love.

Tip 3: One step at a time

What one small change feels like an effortless first step?

Take one step at a time, there can be a pressure to make huge changes within your eating habits quickly. Start with one food swap and get used to it before you move onto something else. This could be changing white potatoes for sweet potatoes, regular cooking oil for coconut oil or cows milk for almond milk.

Find those changes which feel easy, work with them and don’t expect everything to change overnight. You need to see this as a journey and eventually you will look at your eating habits and realise that your diet and approach to eating is how you wanted it to be when you first set your original goal.

I know that I have a mindset that wants to go to the extreme, like I’m gonna go on a three day fast or exercise every single day, but I know that this isn’t sustainable for me and means I only end up binging, so I resist the urge to go crazy and just make a few adjustments that are sustainable.

Why investing in yourself means others will too

 

It’s been a busy few weeks for me, with non stop travelling and a number of projects coming together all at once, I’ve been exhausted.

The sob I had in the car last Sunday on the way to Space’s final ever closing after 27 years of being the best club in the world, had been waiting for its moment.

In typical boyfriend style, mine said “Do you feel better now you’ve had a little cry?” and to be fair, yeah I did, because I knew everything would be fine.

I had just made the biggest investment into my own success to date, £7000 for my mentor and coach.

Having worked with many coaches before, it’s not having my own coach that was unusual, it was the ease in which I said yes to investing in myself that surprised me.

I’ve come to learn that through investing in myself, others invest in me too and I see the return x 10. It’s not just a financial investment either, it can be time and energy too.

Could your love day dream actually be making you unhappy?

When people come to me, they are searching for something more in their lives and sometimes that more is love-to find love or to have more love in their relationship. This week I was at The National Wedding show sharing my tips for a happy and long lasting relationship which I want to share with you too.

I’ve not yet had someone come to me saying; “What I really want to work on this time, is to have the unhappiest relationship I’ve ever had and for the shortest period of time.” Most of us want long lasting and happy relationships because ultimately we all want to love and be loved and what I’ve learned from listening to the relationship dreams of others and uncovering what holds us back, is that there is a common block creating disappointment and unhappiness when it comes to love.

I’ll be honest with you, I can still find myself doing it and I’m in a happy relationship. So it’s something that requires awareness and is a good first point of questioning if you’re feeling unhappy in love.

I blame Jennifer Anniston for my story.

It’s nothing to do with the Brangelina drama, I love, love, love Jen but I’ve watched every single one of her Romantic Comedies and I think they have began to skew my expectation of finding love.

You see, I have a day dream in my head and if I allow myself to indulge into it, I can begin to feel disappointed that my story didn’t turn out like this, even though I am genuinely happy.

It goes like this…

I’m in London on an Autumn day and I’m waking down the cobbled streets in my Manolos, hair perfect and blowing (think the opening scene to Sex And The City)

I go to Starbucks to buy a coffee and while I’m debating a decaf soya latte over a hot chocolate, I don’t notice the tall, dark and handsome guy in front of me, so that when he turns around we bump into each other and he spills his hot coffee all over my shirt. In true rom-com fashion, all is well because despite the flustering we lock eyes and we know in that moment that we are meant for each other. He sweeps me off my feet, marries me and makes me really happy.

The end.

There are two big problems with this story.

1: It’s HOT COFFEE! How do you make third degree burns sexy and funny?

2: The expectation that it should happen exactly this way and that someone else will make me happy.

Whether it’s because of rom-coms, Disney movies or the books we were read as little girls, the expectation that love is a certain way has become a story for many of us and holding onto that story can stop us enjoying what we have RIGHT NOW.

Too much expectation in life leads to disappointment and it’s not someone else’s job to make us happy. We are responsible for our own happiness and the more we outsource it to a day dream in the future or to our potential or current partner, the more chance there is for unhappiness.

So if you feel unhappy around love, question your expectations. What story are you holding onto that could be leading to unhappiness and how might your expectations of something else be stopping you from finding happiness right now?

7 Books I’m Reading About Becoming Rich

 

Every now and then I feel like a snake shedding it’s skin. Life tends to feel tight and heavy the weeks before my new self appears and then there is a light bulb moment which allows the old to fall away and the new to find itself and shine.

My latest life upgrade is about becoming mega rich. So rich that I can enjoy all of the wonders and joys of the world, I can treat my friends and family to everything I’ve ever wanted to give them and donate large sums to charity.

Now even as I have written that sentence, I deleted it twice before I decided it’s fine to write. Why is that…?

Because there is a societal belief that saying you want to be rich is crass, greedy and selfish or if we do allow ourselves to say it, it’s more of a wish that holds no drive because we don’t really believe it will happen to us.

Well, that all just fell away with my latest new becomings and it occurred to me that in this area of my life, I have not been using my usual system for success.

Fill myself up with knowledge and mimic those that are already doing it well.

So many of us desire to have more money, yet how many of us have actually ever pick up a book that teaches you how to become rich and is written by someone who is already rich?

The belief that it will never be you can be so strong that you don’t even think that these books are for you.

From new mum to world stage- Mirella Ingamells WBFF competitor

You can’t deny a transformation when it’s a transformation of the body, you can damn well see it. We all love a good before and after photo and this month I’ve interviewed an inspirational women whose ‘b & a’ photos I’ve been addicted to on Instagram. Sticking to weight loss and fitness goals can be the hardest, but not for Mirella Ingamells WBFF competitor who’s a pro at transforming her body with the photos and WBFF evidence to prove it.

I wanted to delve into her mind to uncover what thoughts and beliefs she has that help her succeed, because it’s not everyday that you hear of a new mum returning to the world stage in a matter of under 12 months and placing sixth – she’s got a winning formula and I was desperate to hear what had kept her away from temptation this summer.

It was good to hear that her winning formula doesn’t mean that she has no inner saboteur or that after months of portioned meals and not even a whiff of a gin and tonic does she not long for the days she can let her hair down. Even the most disciplined have ‘that’ voice but it’s whether you choose to listen to it or not, which is no doubt why she not only came sixth this year but second in 2014 also.

How to overcome a fear of ageing without having Botox

 

A few years ago I boldly stated that I wouldn’t have Botox.

I am the first to admit that may have been a little naive and easy to say when you have a wrinkle free face. It’s a bit like declaring that you won’t have pain relief while giving birth – you just don’t know till you’re feeling the pain.

So now that I have got wrinkles, how do I feel about it?

Well…I can sense negative inner dialogue scratching at the door like a dog that wants to come and sleep in your bedroom for the night, but unlike a cute puppy that loves you exactly as you are, this presence at my door wants me to beat myself up for getting older (I mean seriously, I’m thinking how ridiculous that sounds as I write it) but I hate the thought of that as much as I hate the thought of being disturbed in my sleep, so I don’t hang on to those thoughts for long and wish them a good night, sleep well and f**k off, no you can’t get a cuddle.

I still don’t want to Botox and I explain why in this video.

Let’s be clear though, this isn’t really about the Botox, it never did anything wrong and it’s not to blame, nor is anyone who has it or gives it. This decision runs a lot deeper for me.
